Tuesday, March 20, 2007 (Nandigram):
Ten armed men arrested by the CBI in Khejuri in West Bengal have reportedly said they are workers of the CPI(M) and members of the reserve forces.
The CBI is expected to present a report on them to the High Court.
They were carrying CPI(M) flags, arms and ammunition when they were detained - but they denied involvement in the police firing on March 14.
They were arrested at a brick kiln and their cell phones contained numbers of CPI(M) leaders in East Midnapore district.
Harmad Vahini
Armed men in the area are called Harmad Vahini or Harmad's Army named after the legendary Portuguese pirates.
"Some policemen were wearing chappals so we don't know if they were really police or the Harmad Vahini," a resident of Sonachura said, where 14 people were shot.
"The CPI-M cadre is called Harmad Vahini. Some of the CPI-M people indulge in a lot of violence. We call them the Harmad Vahini."
Sonachura residents say they noticed men dressed like police and wearing chappals mixed with the police units.
"They wore police uniforms and helmets but instead of shoes they had chappals. I think they are CPM cadre. For the last two months they had been gathering at Khejuri," Babulal Barman, another resident of Sonachura said.
CBI report
The CPI-M has not commented on the allegiance claimed by the armed men.
Nine of them are from Potashpur in West Midnapore and the tenth man is allegedly a card holding member of a local committee of the party.
If the CBI's report confirms even one of the above claims, the CPI-M will find itself in a spot.
